The Albert Bartlett Hurdle Cheltenham is the premier staying hurdle race for novice horses and ran over three miles it is a huge test of stamina. This race is where we will see future Gold Cup and future Stayers Hurdle horses so it is always a good race to watch with the future in mind. We have seen some exceptional winners of the race in the past, and hopefully that continues as many more great horses come through the novice system.
The three mile test is a lot for young horses like what take part in this race and we have seen many good horses fail to stay the trip and ultimately disappoint in this race. If you back the winner of this race and it is a horse that stays the distance very well, that horse will race at three miles or more for the rest of their career.
Betting on the Cheltenham Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle race at this stage can be quite tough, many of the horses are yet to be seen over hurdles and the ones that ran last season in flat races have not ran over this type of distance before. That means some guesswork is required, but it is possible to narrow down the field if you put a bit of work in.

Despite being quite hard to work out at this time of year, a couple of horses stand out so far in the betting for the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle. These horses have shown promise on what we have seen so far, but they have also being spoken about highly in the various stable previews that take place. They need to improve on what we have seen so far to win the Albert Bartlett Novice Hurdle 2023, but we believe they will do and both will have good seasons.
My main fancy for this race is Samcro, his is a huge horse and many people have already been speaking about him. He ran three times in national hunt flat races last season, including one listed win and although those were only over two miles, he looked like a horse that needed to run over further. He won a point to point over three miles and that shows he has the stamina for this race. We have seen him win one hurdle race so far, he is going to go on and have a very good season, hopefully ending with a victory in the Albert Bartlett at Cheltenham.
The second horse we like is one that we believe will really come into his own this season and that is Ballyward. He ran just once under rules last season, winning a national hunt flat race by 16 lengths. He was spoken about a lot before that run and is clearly showing the right signs at home. He came second in a three mile point to point race before moving to Willie Mullins’ yard so he is another that will certainly have the stamina for this race. He is more of a dark horse, but one we are excited to see this season and we are expecting him to win his fair share of races.

Many people will have heard about Samcro, he has been one of the most talked about horses over the summer and already has quite a reputation. He won a point to point race over three miles which we like to see, showing that he has good stamina despite running over two miles last season. He was impressive in his national hunt flat races, despite that being a trip too short for him and this year we are going to see him in a better light over further and with hurdles in front of him to jump.
After seeing him win a hurdle race this season, he clearly knows how to jump and we expect that as soon as this season is over, he will be going chasing with one eye on the Gold Cup in years to come. That is how highly we rate him right now and he is going to be such an exciting horse to follow, not just this year, but over the next few years. While we do think Samcro is good enough to win the Albert Bartlett, whatever he does this season, he will improve even further when chasing in the future. All in all, he's got incredible Albert Bartlett Novice hurdle stats.

We haven’t seen much of Ballyward and tipping him up at this stage is certainly taking a step into the unknown. We have not seen him jump a hurdle under rules and his own proper run was a win in a two mile national hunt flat race. However, he was very impressive that day and all the right people are talking about how good this horse could be. He has been given time, but we are expecting to see a lot more of him this season, running in a few races before hopefully making the Cheltenham Festival and running in the Albert Bartlett.
Willie Mullins won this race last season and he knows what to look for in a horse when it comes to running at the Cheltenham Festival. We are sure he will prepare this horse well, and we are convinced that he is capable of going to the top. Once he makes his hurdling debut and people have seen him on the course this season, assuming he wins he will be a much shorter price in the betting for this race.

The stats for the Albert Bartlett Hurdle Cheltenham race are not really conclusive, with five winners coming from Ireland and five coming from Britain. A different trainer has won every race over the past ten years and with that in mind, it is more a case of finding the best horse and not looking for specific trainers.

The Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle is a huge test for young novice hurdlers, testing their jumping ability as well as their stamina. The horses that win this race usually go on to be top class horses either as hurdlers or chasers so it is certainly worth keeping an eye on this race after the event.
The race is for novice hurdlers only, and the age limit on the race is four year old and above. This makes the race the starting platform for many young horses, who go on to have great racing careers at a high level.
