Sired by the Shirocco, who was a breeder stallion sired by Brown Panther – a racehorse capable of being considered as one of the top Cheltenham horses, Annie Power has lived up to the pedigree.

Annie Power’s career in the National Hunt races started in 2012. After enjoying quite a few successes early on, Annie Power started on the path of being named as one of the top Champion Hurdle runners by taking part in her first hurdle event in November. In her novice season, Annie Power elected not to take part in the list of Cheltenham World Hurdle runners.

Major successes came in the 2013 season after she managed to win the Ascot Hurdle by beating Zarkandar, who is one of the top Cheltenham World Hurdle horses. This success immediately made her a favourite for the upcoming Cheltenham Festival as one of the horses in Champion Hurdle. Even though Annie Power did not start as the favourite Cheltenham World Hurdle horses, but she came very close to beating More Of That.

The 2014 season saw Annie Power make a major step up in the game by winning the likes of Doncaster Mares’ Hurdle. Even as she was concentrating on the hurdle events, Gold Cup horses were quite fearful of Annie Power considering her record even when not being one of the Gold Cup runners. Annie Power’s odds in hurdle events started rising considerably since 2014 and it was a sign that she was now one of the horses Cheltenham wanted to feature the most as a Cheltenham runner.

The major breakthrough for Annie Power as one of the Cheltenham runners came in 2016 when she was put on the Cheltenham Champion Hurdle runners list due to the injuries to other thoroughbreds. Overcoming a strong list of runners Cheltenham gave, Annie Power finally achieved the biggest glory. She may still not be one of the top Cheltenham Gold Cup runners or Queen Mother Champion Chase runners, but there is no doubt that only a few Queen Mother Champion Chase horses can live with her quality.

Sired by Denham Red, who was not one of the Champion Hurdle runners but was known for hurdles in France, Un de Sceaux was trained in France during the early days.

Un de Sceaux initially began with hurdle events in the 2013-14 National Hunt season. Staying undefeated in the first five races clearly showed a lot of potential as Cheltenham World Hurdle runners. He was just making progress into the Grade 2 races, and he was not part of 2014 Cheltenham runners. Instead, Un de Sceaux returned to France in order to get more training. During this period, he made the transition into one of the top Cheltenham World Hurdle horses after winning the Prix Hypothese by beating Grande Course de Haies d’Auteuil winner Gemix, who is regarded as one of the top horses for Cheltenham.

Un de Sceaux started taking part in novice steeplechase events in the 2014-15 season. Despite not being a favourite among the horses in Cheltenham Festival 2015, Un de Sceaux managed to win the Arkle Challenge Trophy beating popular Cheltenham horses like Vibrato Valtat. This indeed was the turning point in his career. From here on, Un de Sceaux would be considered as one of the top runners Cheltenham saw. Even though he was yet to become one of the winning Gold Cup horses, Un de Sceaux was starting to be considered as among the proper Gold Cup runners.

Even into the 2016 season, Un de Sceaux was still considered as a specialist when it comes to chase events and not among the top horses in Champion Hurdle. It did not stop Un de Sceaux from being paired up alongside Queen Mother Champion Chase horses like Sprinter Sacre. Even though he did not emerge victorious, he remains as one of the top Queen Mother Champion Chase runners. Featuring as the top Cheltenham Champion Hurdle runners would be one of the main objectives of Un de Sceaux going forward.

Nichols Canyon is a British-born thoroughbred racehorse which started out well in flat races before being considered as one of the top Cheltenham World Hurdle runners. Nichols Canyon managed to win three out of the first 10 flat races in his first two campaigns.

It made him a prominent face when it comes to competitors for Cheltenham Gold Cup runners. One of the major events that elevated Nichols Canyon to the status of being a top Cheltenham Champion Hurdle runners was his victory over Faugheen, who had been undefeated until then.

Sired by none other than Authorized, who is himself regarded as one of the top Cheltenham horses after winning the likes of the International Stakes. Nichols Canyon may have failed to win his debut race, after coming a close second, but he was already on his way to being considered as potential Cheltenham runners. A Cheltenham runner always excels when it comes to chase events and it was the case with Nichols Canyon. However, few would have expected Nichols Canyon’s transformation into one of the top horses in Champion Hurdle.

Nichols Canyon made a prominent impact in the National Hunt novice season by managing a string of wins in 2015. It was during the transfer to Ireland when Nichols Canyon started making progress as one of the top Cheltenham World Hurdle horses. Incidentally, almost all victories achieved by Nichols Canyon in 2015 were in hurdle events. It has transformed Nichols Canyon’s status as one of the Champion Hurdle runners. It may be awhile before Nichols Canyon’s makes his mark as Queen Mother Champion Chase runners.

Sprinter Sacre is a French-bred horse, but was trained in Britain throughout his racing days. He is regarded as one of the greatest steeplechase and Queen Mother Champion Chase horses around. Only Flyingbolt and Arkle on 212 are regarded as better Queen Mother Champion Chase runners purely in terms of ratings. It did not take long for Sprinter Sacre to become a successful Cheltenham runner upon arriving in England. He managed to win two flat races in 2010 followed by an equal number of hurdles events a year later.

Even though Sprinter Sacre has managed to be part of Champion Hurdle runners, he has always excelled in terms of Chase events. Still, it does not surprise to learn that horses in Champion Hurdle do fear at the sight of Sprinter Sacre. As a result, Sprinter Sacre remains one of the top Cheltenham Champion Hurdle runners around.

There were some emphatic victories for Sprinter Sacre during the 2013 season. One of the prominent was a success at the Queen Mother Champion Chase, and it finally elevated him as one of the best Gold Cup horses. This new status as one of the best Gold Cup runners did not create issues for Sprinter Sacre in that season as he managed to win several more major events. Cheltenham Gold Cup horses are truly changed upon the ability to sustain success for a long, but there was a major scare for Sprinter Sacre in the coming season.

Cheltenham World Hurdle horses started taking the attention off Sprinter Sacre during 2014, as numerous health issues prevented him from making a major impact. After no titles in 2014, Sprinter Sacre returned back with a bang in 2015 with a couple of Chase victories to once again still fear into the Cheltenham World Hurdle runners.

Even though there was not much in the way of new titles in 2015, Sprinter Sacre maintained his status as one of the top horses in Cheltenham by staying unbeaten. This ensures that Sprinter Sacre will remain as among the favourite horses for Cheltenham Festival.

Returning back to winning ways was a major priority for runners Cheltenham had witnessed like Sprinter Sacre, but the only major title in 2016 was the Celebration Chase. Cheltenham horses like Un de Sceaux were overcome during this win. Sprinter Sacre has a while to go before being considered as the best horses Cheltenham witnesses in the upcoming season, but he always has potential as one of the Cheltenham runners.

Part of the reason why Thistlecrack has already been considered as one of the top horses Cheltenham would witness in the upcoming event is due to its lineage. It was sired by none other than Kayf Tara, who managed to win two Irish St Legers and two Ascot Gold Cups at his peak. Other horses in Cheltenham that share its lineage are the likes of Carruthers, Tea For Two, and Planet of Sound. All these horses have been considered as a top Cheltenham runner.

Thistlecrack was not in the racing scene until he was five, but he has not looked back since his victory at a flat race in 2014. The National Hunt 2014-15 season saw Thistlecrack, now starting to become one of the top Gold cup runners, managing two wins at minor hurdle races. It was the start of Thistlecrack making his presence felt as one of the top horses in Champion Hurdle. His biggest breakthrough came in the Grade 1 Sefton Novices’ Hurdle, as one of the Cheltenham World Hurdle Runners. Thistlecrack managed to overcome other runners Cheltenham witnessed – Vyta Du Roc and Our Kaempfer – for a win.

In the 2015-16 season, Thistlecrack established himself as one of the top Gold Cup horses with victories at the likes of World Hurdle, Long Distance Hurdle, Liverpool Hurdle, Long Walk Hurdle, and Cleeve Hurdle. The successor to the World Hurdle on 17 March transformed Thistlecrack into one of the top Cheltenham World Hurdle horses. His biggest success so far came at the Ryanair World Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March 2016. Despite the Cheltenham runners being the likes of Alpha des Obeaux and Bobs Worth, Thistlecrack managed to establish himself as a front-runner when it comes to Cheltenham horses.

In this form, Thistlecrack would be one of the Queen Mother Champion Chase runners expected to make progress into one of top Queen Mother Champion Chase horses.

Foaled on 23 February 2007, Coneygree has managed to create several records at the Cheltenham Festival amongst other events. He competes in the National Hunt events as one of the top Queen Mother Champion Chase horses since he has managed to stay unbeaten in chase events. Cheltenham runners usually suffer defeats in chase events, but Coneygree has shown a lot of grit to remain as one of the top horses in Cheltenham. Coneygree is also the first novice Cheltenham runner to be crowned as the champion.

Coneygree was bred by John Oaksey, and he is one of the reasons for transforming talent into among the great Cheltenham Gold Cup runners ever witnessed. The immense talent was a result of being sired by Karinga Bay. The step up towards being one of the top Cheltenham horses for Coneygree came in the 2011-12 season when he made his debut and straightaway managed a victory. It was clear that Coneygree was going to be among the top Queen Mother Champion Chase runners, but such quick progress was not expected.

Coneygree won two major hurdle events in 2012 to be recognised as a top young Cheltenham World Hurdle runners. The 2013-14 season would probably rank as one of the poorest for Coneygree, as he failed to win major events and suffered a pelvic injury to be ruled out for 2013. Despite the setbacks, Coneygree would continue to be seen as one of the top Cheltenham World Hurdle horses.

The 2014 and 2015 seasons saw the best of Coneygree. Berkshire Novices’ Chase and Kauto Star Novices’ Chase were the major chase wins for Coneygree, as he was made as one of the favourite horses for Cheltenham Festival.

Coneygree was not going to experience an elevated status as the favourite Gold Cup runners to win the tournament. He became one of the latest Gold Cup horses to win the title by lifting the trophy in 2015.

The progression from a talented horse to one of the best horses Cheltenham had seen is remarkable. It would not be surprising to see Coneygree rated as one of the top Cheltenham Champion Hurdle runners for the next couple of years. Coneygree has also proved that horses in Champion Hurdle need to have a great trainer on board. As one of the top Champion Hurdle runners, it is expected to see Coneygree as one of the top runners Cheltenham has witnessed.

Best known for steeplechaser events, Cue Card is a thoroughbred racehorse in the United Kingdom. Cue Card has managed to win 14 steeplechaser events to be considered as one of the top Cheltenham runners. An incredible seven victories have been at Grade 1 level making Cue Card as one of the best Cheltenham Champion Hurdle runners around. He has also been quite spectacular in chase events and is rightly considered as one of the Queen Mother Champion Chase horses. Queen Mother Champion Chase runners are only elevated to a greater level after winning numerous chase events.

Success at the Cheltenham Festival came through the Champion Bumper event and it made him one of the top Gold Cup horses. One of the few disadvantages of Cue Card has always been hurdle events. Cue Card may not be one of the best Cheltenham World Hurdle horses around, but he has had some successes. His poor record as a Cheltenham World Hurdle runners is visible from the fact that most of the successes in the 2012-13 season were in chase events.

Poor performance in the hurdle events is not a factor when it comes to considering the best Cheltenham horses, and Cue Card is certainly one of the best Cheltenham runners around. The main criterion for festivals of horses in Cheltenham is to win major events, and Cue Card has managed to do this spectacularly. An injury meant that Cue Card, who may have struggled with a top Champion Hurdle runners, could not add to his collection of titles in 2014, but he returned to stunning form in the 2015 season to end up as one of the best horses in Champion Hurdle.

Once again being one of the best runners Cheltenham had seen, Cue Card was dominating in the chase events after managing to win Charlie Hall Chase and King George VI Chase. These chase wins made Cue Card as one of the favourite Gold Cup runners. A big disappointment for Cue Card – as a top Cheltenham Gold Cup runners – would be the 2016 Cheltenham Gold Cup where he failed to assert his authority as one of the top Gold Cup horses after taking a heavy fall.

The year 2016 would be considered as a disappointment for Cue Card, one of the top horses in Cheltenham festivals, as the Betfred Bowl is now the only solitary success. Still, a few bad months do not affect Cue Card as he still remains as one of the horses for Cheltenham Festival success. It is quite a big pride considering many horses Cheltenham witnesses over the year.

Don Cossack is an Irish-trained which competes in the National Hunt races. As one of the top Cheltenham horses, this German-bred horse has been ridden by numerous top jockeys over the years. Don Cossack showed a lot of promise that it would become a Cheltenham runner right from the young age after winning a novice hurdle and three National Hunt events in 2013.

Don Cossack was sired by Sholokhov, who may not have been one of the Queen Mother Champion Chase horses, but managed to win numerous other top events. After training in Ireland, Don Cossack returned to the United Kingdom to be part of the Cheltenham Champion Hurdle runners after the first win. Even in his first season, Don Cossack was proving his ability as among Cheltenham Gold Cup runners with Drinmore Novice Chase wins. It was not until the 2014-15 season that Don Cossack showed he was about to be the best of the Cheltenham runners.

Winning six of the seven races, Don Cossack’s only defeat ironically came in the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham despite being one of the top Queen Mother Champion Chase runners. He managed to bounce back from the setback rather quickly. By spring, Don Cossack was being regarded as one of the top horses in Champion Hurdle after winning the Punchestown Gold Cup and Melling Chase.

Don Cossack went on to finish the season as the top-rated Gold Cup runners in that season. Horses in Cheltenham races always have to be extremely tough and this Cheltenham runner has more than demonstrated these qualities.

The 2015-16 season will probably be regarded as the best year for Gold Cup horses as it saw the rise of Don Cossack as a winner at the Cheltenham Festival. After entering into the 2016 Festival as one of the horses for Cheltenham victory, Don Cossack did not disappoint and went on to lift the Gold Cup. Being unable to win the King George VI Chase in the season would probably rank as one of the biggest disappointments for one of the top runners Cheltenham has seen. However, it will not be long before Don Cossack is back in the frame for this event as one of the top Champion Hurdle runners.

He remains as one of the top horses Cheltenham has seen and this status was reiterated by being crowned as the best of the Cheltenham World Hurdle horses in May 2016. As one of the top Cheltenham World Hurdle runners, Don Cossack will be favourite for the 2018 event.

Foaled 9 May 2010, Douvan is a French-born horse who was trained in Ireland after moving in 2014. Regarded as one of the best Queen Mother Champion Chase runners around, Douvan came to prominence in the hurdle events. He managed to finish second in his debut race, but that was not going to prevent a rise into one of the best Queen Mother Champion Chase horses. After the slight disappointment from the debut, Douvan managed to win the next five hurdle events to be ranked as one of the top Cheltenham World Hurdle Horses.

Starting out as among the top Cheltenham World Hurdle runners, Douvan went on to claim success at the likes of Moscow Flyer Novice Hurdle, Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, and Herald Champion Novice Hurdle. After having achieved a status as among the top Cheltenham Champion Hurdle runners, Douvan switched over to steeplechasing. Even then, there was no stopping Douvan, as he managed to win six of the first races to be considered as one of the top horses for Cheltenham.

Horses in Cheltenham Festival need to dominate hurdle and chase events; it is exactly what Douvan has been doing for quite a while. A reason for the successes enjoyed by Douvan is the pedigree, as he was sired by one of the top Cheltenham runners – Walk in the Park. It was not until the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle event that Douvan started making his presence felt as a Cheltenham runner. Despite starting at the back of the favourites field of Cheltenham horses, Douvan managed to come from behind and beat the likes of L’Ami Serge. This victory truly made everyone stand up and take notice of Douvan as a top Champion Hurdle runners.

Douvan’s trainer Willie Mullins maintains that the world is yet to be aware of the full capabilities of this horse as one of the top Cheltenham Gold Cup runners. Making an impact as the Gold Cup horses will be one of the main priorities for Douvan going forward.

Douvan may have had only two appearances as one of the runners Cheltenham had witnessed, but victories at the likes of Arkle Challenge Trophy have transformed him into coveted horses Cheltenham loves. Being one of the top Gold Cup runners is extremely difficult, but there is a good opportunity in that Douvan may very well be one given that he is one of the top horses in Champion Hurdle.
