The Queen Mother Champion Chase 2023 is the premier race for two-mile chasers and we have seen some hugely talented horses win this race, as well as many great horses who have failed. The race is a great test of speed and jumping ability, it is very difficult to jump big fences at speed, but without that, you cannot win this race. This is the feature race on day two, and one that racing fans really look forward to throughout the season.
If you're looking for Queen Mother Champion Chase winners, the clash everyone wants to see in this race is Altior vs Douvan, and hopefully, this is something we see. Until injuring himself during this race last season, Douvan had proven himself to be an absolute star at this distance and is a hugely exciting horse. Altior is up and coming and won the Arkle in brilliant fashion last season, he looks to be the one who can not only challenge Douvan but take away his crown.
The great thing about this race is that there isn’t really anywhere else for the horses to go after they have won this race, so you usually see a similar field each season. This could mean we get to see Altior vs Douvan on more than one occasion at the Cheltenham Festival.

The Champion Chase brings together the best of the best when it comes to two-mile chasers and that always makes for a great, and very exciting race. The horses involved have all proven themselves over this distance and at this grade, the race simply boils down to who can win the race on the day, mainly due to the huge Queen Mother Champion Chase prize money - over £350,000.
What we have seen so far from Altior makes him one of the best horses in training and this season is where he can stamp his authority and prove it. After demolishing the novice division and winning the Arkle last season, his focus now turns to the Champion Chase. Based on his form so far, even if we see Douvan back to his absolute best, he looks to be the only one capable of stopping him. Should Douvan not make the race, or not recover as expected then we really could see Altior dominate this race for the next few seasons.
Elsewhere, another young exciting horse is Charbel, who looks up to being able to step up to this level. He fell when being leading Altior in the Arkle last season and we would have loved to have seen how he fared against him going up the hill. Altior previously had beaten him by six lengths, but this looked like it was going to be much closer.

If there is one horse in the field for this race that could dominate the race and win multiple titles then it is Altior. He was fantastic last season as a novice and this is his time to shine. With age on his side and few other races for him at the festival, he could go on to win multiple Champion Chase’s, further enhancing Nicky Henderson’s great record in the race. He even saw great Queen Mother Champion Chase results in his previous runs.
His smallest victory last season was six lengths, and he cruised home in each of his races, demolishing those who tried to beat him while he was a novice. Being just seven years old right now there is no reason to think he will have any problems dominating the two-mile chase division for the next few seasons. This season could be the season where we all struggle to find anything that can beat Altior.

The talk about Altior dominating the two-mile division comes from his performances last season. One horse who chased him home in one of those races, and would have chased him home in another had he not fell was Charbel. If you think Altior is going to dominate and win all the big two-mile races easily in the Queen Mother Chase 2023, then you would also have to fancy Charbel to chase him home, like he has in the past.
Last season was relatively quiet for Charbel, with just four runs during the season. He won nicely on his first start over fences, before chasing home Altior, falling at Cheltenham and disappointing at Aintree. He is just six so has time on his side and if you take out Altior from the division, things look wide open, with Charbel looking capable of challenging the older horses that have competed for the past couple of seasons.

Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls have both had some fantastic horses run in the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase and win the crown for them. It is also a race that British trainers have won far more often than the Irish, a trend that could grow if Altior dominates the division over the next few seasons.

The Queen Mother Champion Chase is a race that many people look forward to seeing and this coming season is going to be no different. We look set for a great clash between the young up and coming horses and the older brigade, with Altior a potential superstar of the game.
The race is a two-mile race for horses that are five years old or older and provides a huge test of jumping ability and speed. Jumping big fences is difficult to do at two-mile pace, and this is where the top horses separate themselves from the rest of the field. With such a fast pace be prepared to see plenty of excitement during the race and the potential for drama.
Should Altior win the race then he is a horse that could dominate this division, going on to be one of the great winners of this race, and another big name to win it for Nicky Henderson. Other notable runners for Queen Mother Chase might appear closer to the race.
